Chapter 1436: The Grand Finale (Part 22)
Lingxin broke out in a sweat. Second Monkey had been thinking all the way that he’d taken this effect into account. Lingxin held his breath again, wanting to hear what other secrets Second Monkey might blurt out, only to find that, just like always, this guy would cause trouble and then immediately climb up beside him and fall fast asleep, snoring. Faced with this Second Monkey who had already been inseparable from him since they were in their mother’s womb, he really had no way to deal with him.
He helplessly hooked up the corner of his mouth. Lingxin turned around, pinched the edge of the quilt and gently pulled it up over his little brother. Looking at his brother’s little sleeping face, drooling in his sleep, Lingxin narrowed his eyes: luckily, this guy who was such a handful, yet also someone he couldn’t live without, had come back to his side.
In the next room, Xiao Yebai, watching his two sons, tightened his arm around his wife and gave her a kiss.
They arrived back in the country a few days later. The injured and the patients were rushed to Mingxin Hospital for the next stage of treatment.
Tang Sili took over the patients being handed off by his students while listening to them report each patient’s condition.
"Young Master Wei had a high fever in the middle, we’re worried about infection, and because the surgical conditions on the ship were limited, the debridement might not have been thorough, so we did a second operation. His condition has stabilized now." Ou Yanan spoke nonstop, mouth dry and tongue parched, not daring to pause for breath. "As for Miss Xiao, her breathing is still very weak. We had already started antibiotics on the ship, but the supportive treatment can only be done once we’re back in the hospital."
"We’ll keep observing those two for now." Tang Sili tapped the tablet medical record in his hand with his pen, then suddenly asked, "How is Mrs. Xiao?"
Mrs. Xiao? Ou Yanan thought he’d misheard. He didn’t remember ever telling Tang Sili that Gu Nuan was injured.
Seeing that he didn’t answer, Tang Sili patted him on the shoulder, indicating that he could go rest first. But Ou Yanan had already sensed something and followed close behind him, asking in a low voice, "Professor, is it my sister’s condition—"
"You didn’t notice anything at all?" Tang Sili shot back.
Ou Yanan’s brows had long since knitted into a tight knot. He finally managed to squeeze out a trace of sound with difficulty: "Her hearing is getting worse and worse."
As Tang Sili listened, his expression didn’t change. His eyes were fixed on Zhao Mengjin as she rushed into the intensive care unit where Xiao Shumei had just been pushed in.
Kneeling by her mother’s bed, Zhao Mengjin was crying so hard she could barely speak: "Mom, Mom— I’m sorry— If you die, I definitely won’t go on living either—" The guilt that had sunk deep in her heart had been there for far, far too long. If it weren’t for clinging to that last sliver of hope, she really would have been unable to forgive herself long ago. If back then she had stopped her mother from going no matter what, her little brother wouldn’t have had to experience the tremendous pain of losing his mother at such a young age.
The rest of the Zhao Family rushed over when they got the news. When they reached the ward door and heard what Zhao Mengjin was saying, Zhao Zirong stretched out his arms to block the others from going in. At this moment he knew very clearly that, aside from his eldest daughter, no one else had the right to go in and see Xiao Shumei first.
Little Pudding and his big brother wiped at the corners of their eyes together. Their mother had come back. The sight of her ravaged by the enemy and gravely ill certainly made them feel sad and furious, but, after all, she had come back. Instead, it was their sister’s voice that made them unable to hold back their tears.
The scene was so moving and tear-jerking that Ou Yanan turned his face away. But beside him, Tang Sili’s face remained indifferent.
Because of the look on Tang Sili’s face at that moment, a completely unprecedented thought flashed through Ou Yanan’s mind: that guy who refused to acknowledge Gu Nuan no matter what—could he be the same as Zhao Mengjin? What on earth is going on? Now that everything has already run its course and come to an end, that person still hasn’t appeared?

Gu Nuan and her husband took their son home first, because the elders at home had been waiting for them for a long time, waiting so anxiously they were at their wits’ end.
