Chapter 1930: Scouting the Grisian Empire (1)
Alexander did say that the inhabitants are weak.
But Rex wasn’t expecting them to be this powerless, so there’s not even a trace of energy in them.
Initially, he was thinking about making use of the inhabitants to at least stall some areas when they were occupied. That’s not going to work. Not when the inhabitants were powerless like this. I hope it’s going to be the same as the Mortal Realm.
Rex was hoping that, like back home, there were normal people and superhuman people.
He overheard the boy earlier talking about becoming a Knight.
It might only be a normal knight that a kingdom would have, but he was hoping that it was more than that.
Everything would be far more difficult if the entire realm was inhabited by normal people.
Swoosh—!
As Demigods, the group tore across the sky like a group of shooting stars.
Rex felt the wind shatter against his face long before his mind could register the blur of clouds and the muted roar of displaced air. The twenty soldiers flew in a tight wedge around him, Davina, and Lilliana; their formation was triangle-shaped, reflecting their single intent.
Below, the world smeared into a watercolor of grey and green.
Hills and mountains folded into valleys.
Considering the name of the realm, Rex already had a picture in his mind of what it would look like in his mind; it didn’t disappoint. Every single thing in this world has a muted color, a greyish smear, and it was because of the ashy motes that were present in the air.
He didn’t know where it came from, but that’s the reason why a greyish hue prevailed in this realm.
A hundred miles passed, and for them, it felt like seconds.
Davina had used her Star Echo above them; a veil of ice-cold starlight rippled from her form, embracing the others’ bodies in sparkling glitters. It bent the light coming from the sky into a pocket of shimmering absence.
To anyone looking up from the ground, they would see nothing but the indifferent drift of clouds.
Under the Star Echo’s embrace, the group is invisible.
Not to mention, earlier, before their departure, one of the soldiers took a pouch from his hold and grasped a handful of something that glinted like crushed gemstones. He scattered the dust onto everyone with a murmured invocation.
Every particular of dust settled over them like fine, luminous ash.
And according to the soldier, the dust was meant to hide their divinity from being sensed.
So that other Demigods wouldn’t be able to sense them easily.
Rex felt it press against his aura, a faint static that tasted of ancient prayers and forgotten temples. It didn’t diminish him. It simply made the world forget he was there. Earlier, Rex was worried that using their powers like this without restraint would disrupt or even crack the dimensional fabric of this realm.
A full Demigod’s manifestation wasn’t something a lesser realm could endure.
But he was worried for nothing.
Because of the three Divine Sources embedded deep within this realm, the realm was surprisingly more tolerant of them. The energy level in this realm was low, yes, but the tolerance to divinity was impossibly high for a lesser realm.
It was a paradox.
A world with weak inhabitants but capable of hosting Demigods.
Rex realized that it was a perfect realm for this kind of battle.
Davina’s eyes sparkled, and the starlight around them brightened. In the next second, their speed doubled again after a sonic boom that reverberated like a thunderclap. Some settlements could be seen—people looking up at the cracking sound coming from the sky.
None could see them.
In under an hour, the group finally arrived at the Grisian Empire.
They hovered above the cloudline, a silent congregation of Demigods looking down upon the sprawling empire below. Lanterns glimmered in every direction, their glow stretching nearly a mile on all sides—a vast, breathing constellation of light that mapped the empire’s immensity.
It was no wonder this faction had risen to such prominence in the realm.
Power was written in the very geography of their dominion.
Rex scanned the people and frowned.
Even the people inside the castle only have power that is equivalent to a fifth-rank realm Awakened.
Locating the emperor was made easy by the system. Right now, he was in his bedchamber, tangled with his harem against the night’s unusual cold. For all his earthly power, his strength barely rivalled that of an early sixth-rank Awakened.
Hardly anything for the current predicament.
Some of the hidden experts who were hiding were at the mid-sixth-rank realm.
Pitiful doesn’t even cut it.
"How are we going to protect the realm when their level of powers is this low?" Lilliana frowned, not knowing how to even begin. To protect the realm, they need to babysit each big faction, and that’s not possible with their number. "Are we going to cherry-pick it?"
"Yes... But we’re not going to be on the defense," Rex turned to the soldier with a red beret, Attar. "Are you sure the Grisian Empire is the strongest one among the big factions? Contemplate this further. Put yourself in their shoes."
Attar didn’t answer instantly.
He contemplated as Rex requested before he nodded, "I’m quite sure. Not only is the Grisian Empire the strongest faction in the Grey Realm, but its location is also strategic. Having roads and bordering three big kingdoms, the enemies would want to start with this empire."
From what he learned, the enemies sowed chaos among the big factions through many methods.
But the most common method was providing free, limited power to topple their nemesis.
One that’ll make factions bolder in making their moves.
It can be done through giving a divine-rank weapon or even direct enhancement using immortal energy.
In that case, we need to know the current situation in the empire.
"Get me one person," Rex instructed.
And without hesitation, Attar descended with extreme speed, landing within the capital city, passing the empire’s defenses like they were nothing. Before a minute even passed, Attar already returned with a man in his thirties wearing smooth silk, which made him a noble.
"I found him telling his men to beat up a peasant," Attar reported while carrying the noble by his collar. "Will he do, Sir?"
"Yes, he will..." Rex stretched out his hand and took the noble from Attar’s hand.
"Let go of me!" the noble thrashed against Rex’s arm, his silk sleeves bunching uselessly around fingers that couldn’t even dent the grip. He pushed, strained, clawed—but there’s nothing he could do to make Rex let go. "Let go!"
Just then, the noble went still as his eyes dropped to the far ground beneath his dangling feet.
Only now did he realize how high he actually was.
Since Rex’s divinity was suppressed, the noble could move and act fine.
"Do you know who I am?!" His voice climbed to a snarl—made bolder by the situation. "I am Alrama, Son of Lord Zulrich the Beheader! Put me down right now, or I’ll have your entire family beheaded in the public square! I’ll have every soul you’ve ever known thrown into a dungeon so deep they’ll forget sunlight entirely!"
"The only way this ends for you is if you answer my question." Rex’s eyes narrowed to slits—his voice a blade pressed against the noble’s throat. "Are you part of the nobility circle? Or just a pampered brat who knows only how to wield his father’s name? Answer me. And this ends."
"How dare you... I know everyone!" He roared. "And my father adores me!"
"Good," Rex nodded his head.
Splash—!
In an instant, before the noble could even react, Rex punched a hole through his chest, turning the other way before doing that so the blood would not burst onto Attar. Not that the blood would touch him with the Star Echo enveloping him, but for courtesy.
Rex pulled his hand out, alongside the noble’s heart.
For a second, the noble was completely stunned, staring at Rex’s blood-slicked hand.
But soon, his head dropped. Dead.
"Do you want it?" Rex offered the still-beating heart to Davina. "It’s the best part."
"Yes, I know," Davina took it gladly.
She tilted her mask just enough to expose her mouth, then slipped the heart beneath it.
A quiet, wet sound followed as she took it past her lips.
Attar and the other soldiers traded glances—visibly caught off guard by the nonchalant discussion Rex and Davina exchanged. An offering to eat a still-beating heart. But then again, with countless realms out there, various species existed.
Rex, Davina, and Lilliana wore the faces of ordinary mortals—but nothing about them was ordinary.
Once the noble died, Rex quickly used the Phantom Pack skill.
Before their eyes, energy seeped out of the corpse’s body like the soul was being extracted from it.
And then, the energy formed into a crimson wolf—hovering in front of Rex.
Rex then placed his hand on its head, and his eyes flickered.
A torrent of information flooded his mind, cold and sharp. The Phantom Pack skill was more than a means to summon spectral wolves—it was a conduit. Each wolf retained the memories of the deceased from which it was forged, and now those memories bled into him, piece by piece.
Gathering information became easier with this.
"Tch," Rex clicked his tongue. "This bastard lied. He barely knows anything."
"You should’ve guessed that," Lilliana commented. "He looked like a moron and a drunkard."
"Should I take another one?" Attar asked.
But Rex shook his head. That’s not necessary, "He might not know the details, but I somewhat know what’s going on in the empire. There’s a rebellion happening. The brother of the emperor allied himself with a few kingdoms and was now pushing on the borders."
"Then the emperor’s brother must be the target," Attar replied. "He’s the perfect one."
"Either way, we can’t be sure that this emperor’s brother is going to be approached," Rex turned to face the soldiers and settled on a plan.
Rex told Attar and the other soldiers to keep a lookout for the big factions near the Grisian Empire; there are two of them, to make sure the enemies aren’t targeting those two factions first. He’s going to be the one handling the Grisian Empire alone.
As for Davina and Lilliana, the two are going to focus on supporting them.
Other than them having good supporting abilities, he also didn’t want them to engage directly.
Having low divinity points and not being a proper Demigod, dealing meaningful damage to the enemy would be an uphill battle. Rather than risk a reckless engagement with little reward, it was better to keep watch—to help the ground by being the eyes watching over the entire continent.
Davina could do that easily with her Star Echo and bloodline.
On the other hand, Lilliana would help others when they are in need since she’s really fast.
As soon as all of them got their instructions, they immediately made their moves, launching themselves away into smaller groups. Rex remained floating above the empire, watching the people below that does not know the coming calamity.
"For starters, High Lord Rashal gave us a really good position," Rex thought aloud.
Because of the intel from High Lord Rashal, they now knew the enemies were going to aim for the Divine Sources. As for the reason why Rex and his group were here instead of helping vacate the Divine Sources, it was because the enemies would make a decoy.
If they bite the decoy, then the enemies wouldn’t expect Alexander to be ready on the Divine Sources.
Or at least, that’s what the Red Skull Elite Force thought.
However, that’s not all.
"In order to make a decoy, the enemy forces would send a decently strong Demigod," Rex’s lips curled into a nasty grin; crimson eyes flashing with malice. Anticipating the things he was going to do. "And that made a perfect prey for me."
