Chapter 585 - 586: Still Dare to Deny? [First Update, Please Subscribe]
"Do you dare?"
Wu Tian’s bold words infuriated the crowd.
"We dare! If you dare, why wouldn’t we?"
"That’s right! I also bet you don’t have a single friend."
"Who would dare associate with you right now? Aren’t they afraid of being implicated?"
The others all laughed and agreed, each taking up the bet with Wu Tian.
In their minds, this bet was already won. Wu Tian was bound to lose! Then, his head would be theirs.
Zhao Bin was also pleased.
"Fine," Wu Tian chuckled. "Then I’ll have my friend come and find me."
He then found a table with Qin Yuhan and the others. They sat down without any intention of leaving the restaurant.
"If you don’t go outside, how is your friend supposed to find you?" one of them asked.
"Have you already made arrangements?" Zhao Bin and the others began to speculate.
Wu Tian smiled and gently uttered two words, "Spiritual Sense."
Zhao Bin and the others exchanged stunned glances and then burst out laughing. Everyone knew that the higher one’s cultivation, the broader their Spiritual Sense! But using it to notify someone was another matter entirely. That required Spiritual Sense techniques, even Spiritual Martial Skills.
Ever since the Wutian Celestial Emperor had vanished without a trace, those who had mastered such skills in the Immortal Emperor Realm were few and far between. Without exception, they were all people of great prominence. How could this Wu Tian possibly be one of them? Zhao Bin and the others concluded that Wu Tian was simply boasting.
Wu Tian, however, simply sipped his tea while extending his Spiritual Sense, notifying City Lord Guang from Duke Guang’s Mansion and the young Princess Si’er in the Royal Palace.
Wu Tian and his companions were on the second floor of the restaurant. Before long, a commotion erupted downstairs.
"My friend is here," Wu Tian said with a small smile.
Using one’s Spiritual Sense to survey the surroundings was a skill many people possessed. But using it for other purposes was not something everyone could do. This was especially true for the people in the restaurant, who were mostly wealthy nobles with no real accomplishments in their Martial Arts Cultivation.
"Li Liang, go downstairs and see what’s going on," Zhao Bin commanded. "Find out who it is that still dares to admit they’re Wu Tian’s friend at a time like this!"
"Yes, sir." Li Liang nodded. In the hierarchy of officialdom, Zhao Bin was his superior, so he immediately headed downstairs.
Zhao Bin was eager to see if a friend of Wu Tian’s had really arrived. Under these circumstances, who would possibly dare to make such a claim?
A moment later, Li Liang returned upstairs, his face grim.
"Who is it?" Zhao Bin asked. Seeing Li Liang’s expression, he had a sinking feeling.
"City Lord Guang has arrived with his men," Li Liang stammered. "He says..."
"The Guang Family and the Wu Family have been friends for generations upon generations," a powerful voice declared. Before Li Liang could finish, City Lord Guang himself strode up the stairs, his presence commanding.
The faces of Zhao Bin and the others turned ashen, unable to believe what they were hearing. Wu Tian had killed the Regent King, the leader of all corrupt officials! It would have been normal for City Lord Guang, a known bastion of integrity, to protect Wu Tian from them. But Wu Tian had also killed Master Dao Zuo of the King’s Teachers. Why would City Lord Guang still protect him?
They simply couldn’t believe what they were seeing. What on earth was wrong with City Lord Guang? Everyone in the court and beyond knew that City Lord Guang was a man of supreme composure and impartiality. Why was he going to such lengths to shield Wu Tian now? Has he lost his mind?
"City Lord Guang, are you sure?" one of the officials demanded. "You may be a descendant of Guang Changlin, and the Boundless Former King himself decreed that your Guang Family is forever innocent unless they commit treason. But this matter is beyond your jurisdiction! Even if he were a member of your Guang Family, he must die!"
Zhao Bin and the other officials stared at City Lord Guang, trying to sway his stance. "Are you certain you want to protect him and claim to be his friend?"
If City Lord Guang were truly calm and wise, he would know the correct choice to make.
"My word is final," City Lord Guang said, his face cold. He grunted sharply, and his expression made it clear to everyone that his mind was made up, firm as iron.
"Good. Good! GOOD!" Zhao Bin snarled through gritted teeth.
The other officials’ faces darkened.
"So, does this mean I’ve won the bet?" Wu Tian smiled. "Are your heads now for me to command?"
The faces of Zhao Bin and the others became even more contorted with embarrassment and ugliness. Of course, they had bet against Wu Tian hoping his head would be theirs. They had celebrated the thought of winning and never even considered the possibility of losing. Anxious about how the situation had turned, they all exchanged glances. At this moment, it didn’t matter if they were corrupt or upright officials; none of them wanted to concede. They were enemies, but an adversary is often the one who understands you best. Now, everyone in the restaurant—upright officials, corrupt officials, and all the others—was united in a single thought.
"That doesn’t count!" one of the upright officials suddenly stepped forward. "City Lord Guang is so protective of you, he might as well be your family! In a capital case, testimony from family members is inadmissible! Therefore, he doesn’t count!"
"Right, he doesn’t count!" the others chimed in one after another.
"This one doesn’t count."
"Get someone else!"
"Yes, get someone else! If you can call another person who claims to be your friend and is willing to protect you, our heads are yours!"
"That’s right!"
Wu Tian calmly observed the pathetic display, a disdainful smirk playing on his lips. "If I call someone else, you won’t go back on your word again, will you?"
Zhao Bin and the others exchanged strange looks, but having come this far, they had no choice. "As long as the next person you call is of high status, no less than City Lord Guang, it will count!"
"Right! Then our heads will be yours. We will take our own lives if you command it, no questions asked."
"Yes!" they all affirmed.
"Heh," Wu Tian chuckled, sensing someone’s arrival. "The next one is here. You should all prepare to take your own lives."
Startled, Zhao Bin and the others heard another uproar from downstairs. Zhao Bin gritted his teeth. "I said, the person who comes must have a status higher than City Lord Guang. Some unsavory character or random nobody won’t count."
"Are you calling me an unsavory character?" a cold voice rang out. "A random nobody?"
In the Royal Palace, Si’er had been racking her brain for a way to clear Wu Tian’s name when his Spiritual Sense message reached her. She had rushed over immediately. Now, as she ascended the stairs, her icy gaze swept over Zhao Bin and the others. "Are you serious?"
"P-Pr... Princess," Zhao Bin and the others gasped, their blood running cold.
How could this be happening? This made no sense!
"No, no, it can’t be!" the upright official who had spoken earlier suddenly shouted at Wu Tian, his face a ferocious mask. "You must have used some sort of Bewitching Art to cloud the Princess’s mind! That must be why she’s acting this way!"
You don’t need many friends. Sometimes, one is enough. And if you had a friend like the Princess, most people wouldn’t care if they lost all their others. But the Princess rarely left the Royal Palace. Few had ever met her, let alone had the chance to befriend her. Why would she know Wu Tian?
"It doesn’t matter how I know the Princess or what our relationship is," Wu Tian stated coolly, disdaining to engage with their sophistry. "The point is, you lost the bet. Isn’t it time you honored it? Are your heads not mine now?"
