Chapter 26 Infiltration
Chapter 26 Infiltration
High above Camp 17, a crimson fire flickered in the darkness.
Yuri, standing in the shadows, slowly exhaled a puff of smoke.
He watched as Lu Ye, who hadn't hesitated at all, slowly disappeared into the night with firm steps, a hint of appreciation reappearing in his originally cold eyes.
"Dmitri's insight is as sharp as ever," Yuri thought to himself.
This seemingly frail young foreigner not only possesses the ruthlessness of a desperate criminal, but also a cold-blooded calmness born of the battlefield.
"You little brat, I hope you come back safe and sound." Yuri stubbed out his cigarette and turned to walk back to the warm command post.
……
After leaving the camp, thanks to the improvement in his attributes, Lu Ye's mind quickly entered a battle state.
The distance of fifteen kilometers takes less than twenty minutes by car on a flat road.
But in this war zone riddled with craters and minefields, those fifteen kilometers are a road to hell.
[Dim Vision (Passive)] played an extremely terrifying role at this time.
In Lu Ye's view, the pitch-black wilderness, which was originally so dark that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, now presented a strange but clear gray-green outline.
He avoided the craters filled with rainwater that could make noise, and he could spot the tattered barbed wire hanging in the bushes in advance.
3:40 a.m.
After nearly four hours of highly focused movement, Lu Ye finally arrived at his destination.
The place reeks of a pungent smell, a mixture of chemicals and sewage.
The enormous cooling towers pierced the sky, and the crisscrossing pipes and large sections of collapsed concrete buildings creaked and groaned in the wind.
Lu Ye did not approach rashly.
He stopped on a high slope about 400 meters from the perimeter of the chemical plant, using a clump of dead bushes as cover, set up his sniper rifle, and began a thorough survey of the area around the target.
"It's too quiet."
This was the first thought that popped into Lu Ye's mind.
As a strategic location where the enemy could very likely be hiding heavy artillery positions, there was no sign of any mobile patrols on the outskirts, and not even the usual searchlights were turned on.
The entire chemical plant was lifeless, as if it were truly a completely abandoned ruin.
Something's not right!
The observation continued until 5 a.m.
The sky was beginning to lighten with a faint glimmer of dawn; once daybreak came, this slope would become the first place the enemy would search!
"We must find a hiding place before dawn."
Lu Ye put away his rifle and carefully slid down the slope, infiltrating towards the outer edge of the chemical plant.
Driven by his instincts with Basic Camouflage (LV2), he chose an extremely disgusting but relatively safe infiltration route.
The sewage from the drainage ditch soaked through his tactical pants, and the cold and stench assaulted his senses.
As dawn broke, Lu Ye stopped in a collapsed culvert near the chemical plant in the drainage ditch.
The space here is cramped, with a height of less than half a meter.
He grabbed a handful of mud mixed with rust and oil, smeared it on his face and neck, and then adjusted his breathing to lower his heart rate to the minimum.
Lu Ye could clearly see some clues through the gaps in the weeds in front of the culvert.
First, there's the broken cement road leading to the main gate of the chemical plant.
The soil along the edge of the road showed signs of being crushed by tracks, but the road was covered with a layer of dead branches and leaves.
Secondly, near a row of abandoned power distribution rooms on the outskirts, Lu Ye spotted some extremely subtle reflections of thin lines.
"Booby traps and tripwire directional mines!" Lu Ye frowned. "No wonder Wolf's cannon fodder couldn't infiltrate."
Just then, in Lu Ye's line of sight, a patrol team of three, leading a Caucasian Shepherd Dog, patrolled toward the direction where he was hiding.
"Woof woof, woof woof!"
The military dog started barking about five meters away from Lu Ye.
Immediately, the three members of the patrol team went on alert.
"What's going on?!"
"It smells bad!"
"Of course it smells! This is the wastewater discharge outlet of a chemical plant. How could it not stink?"
"The smell is probably too strong for the dogs! Okay, okay, let's get on patrol!"
"Yeah, let's get out of here! Damn it, what bad luck, we lost the bet last night. Otherwise, we'd be the ones in bed!"
Lu Ye heard the three men's cursing gradually subside, and his heart slowly calmed down!
"Thank goodness! The stench of the sewage masks the smell!"
Time ticked by, and the pain began to intensify exponentially.
The icy sewage kept drawing heat from his body, and by noon, Lu Ye's limbs were so cold they were almost numb.
The muscles begin to spasm due to prolonged stiffness.
Several venomous insects, about the size of a thumb, crawled up his neck through the mud and bit his skin hard, followed by waves of excruciating pain.
Lu Ye tried his best to remain calm, gritting his teeth: "The intelligence isn't enough..."
Although he was certain that the area was heavily guarded by enemy troops, he did not see any cannon barrels or hear any mechanical sounds.
The problem is that without the exact artillery model and precise coordinates, that bastard Vorov will definitely not admit it.
So he could only wait.
Finally, after enduring the torment, Lu Ye welcomed the arrival of night on the second day.
As the last ray of sunlight disappeared below the horizon, the chemical plant was once again shrouded in darkness, and Lu Ye slowly exhaled a breath of stale air.
He didn't rush into action; instead, he slowly moved each part of his body and each joint, checking whether the weapons and ammunition had been affected.
"Nearly twenty-four hours have passed; we must risk sneaking closer."
Lu Ye slowly slid out of the culvert.
He avoided the outer minefields and, using his dim vision, followed the massive shadows of the chemical plant buildings, penetrating deep inside.
Just as he crossed a rusty barbed wire fence and crept behind a huge abandoned reactor, a low murmur of conversation reached his ears.
Lu Ye tensed up instantly, and his [Perception LV1] immediately locked onto the source of the sound.
He cautiously peeked out and looked over.
Less than twenty meters away from him, outside a dilapidated makeshift shed, two enemy soldiers were smoking.
"This awful weather! If it keeps getting this humid, the hydraulic systems of those 'big guys' will all break down sooner or later," complained a soldier with a heavy Ukrainian accent.
"Shut your stinking mouth." Another voice was even deeper. "The higher-ups have given a death order: the infrared camouflage netting on the M777 howitzers must be in place 24 hours a day."
"There's nothing we can do about the leaking ceiling in Workshop No. 3. The engineering corps will come to fix it tomorrow."
"I really don't know how much longer we'll have to stay here. Wave after wave of Russian cannon fodder keeps coming in; aren't they afraid of dying?"
"Alright, finish this one and get on patrol. The company commander said we're on double alert tonight."
