Chapter 24 Acceptance
Chapter 24 Acceptance
"Ah!" Scarface let out a bloodcurdling scream like a pig being slaughtered, and the assault rifle in his hand fell directly into the mud.
But Lu Ye's actions did not stop! His eyes flashed with a fierce light, and he pulled out the dagger from the outside of his thigh with his right hand, pressing it directly against the scarred man's throat.
It all happened so fast that even Dmitry didn't have time to react!
"Let him go!"
"Hands up! Drop your weapons!"
The surrounding guards instantly erupted into chaos. More than a dozen assault rifles simultaneously cocked their bolts, all pointing their dark muzzles at Lu Ye's head, while the Caucasian Shepherds barked wildly.
Seeing this, Alexei and the others did not hesitate to raise their guns and confront the guards.
The atmosphere instantly became tense, and the air was thick with the smell of gunpowder.
"Stop it, all of you!" Just at this critical moment, the heavy bulletproof wooden door of the command post was kicked open.
Major Vorov, with his large belly protruding, a cigar dangling from his mouth and a Stechkin automatic pistol in his hand, stormed out angrily.
"Dmitri, are you crazy?! You dare to cause trouble on my turf? Believe me, I'll have you all shot dead right now!" Vorov looked at the guard whose neck was being held to his throat by Lu Ye, his face trembling violently.
"Worov, keep your dogs in check." Dmitry met Worov's gaze without backing down, strode to Lu Ye's side, and used his body to block several gun barrels aimed at Lu Ye.
"Make this bastard put down the knife!" Wolf roared, brandishing his pistol.
Lu Ye ignored Wolf's roar.
He gripped the scarred guard, who was sweating profusely, tightly, his gaze passing over Dmitry's shoulder and fixed on Vorov.
"Major." Lu Ye's voice was unusually calm, without a trace of fear. "I heard that you need someone to go to that abandoned chemical plant in the east to carry out a reconnaissance mission."
Wolf paused, his hand holding the cigar hanging in mid-air. "So what if it is?"
"I'll take that mission."
Lu Ye's voice wasn't loud, but it reached everyone's ears clearly.
Dmitri whirled around, staring at Lu Ye in disbelief: "Lu! Are you crazy?! Going there is suicide!"
Alexei panicked: "Lu, don't be impulsive!"
"Captain, I'm already a dead man." Lu Ye looked at Dmitry. "If I don't take this, I won't survive either."
He turned his head, continued staring at Vorov, and said, word by word, "I volunteer for a high-risk reconnaissance mission to help you gather intelligence! But I have one condition!"
"You accepted it?" Wolf's hand, holding a cigar, paused in mid-air, and he suddenly laughed, his fat twitching.
"A foreign cannon fodder without even a formal position dares to make demands of me? I can crush you into a pulp with just one order!"
"Then go ahead and shoot. Let's see if I die first, or if one of your men gets his carotid artery severed."
Scarface trembled violently with fear, his pig-like screams were forced back into his throat, and he only dared to let out "hoarse" cries for help.
"Damn it, you dare threaten me?" Vorov abruptly raised the Stechkin pistol in his hand, racked the slide, and said, "Do you think I care whether he lives or dies?"
"Slap, slap, slap."
Just at this critical moment, a slow and steady round of applause suddenly came from behind the heavy bulletproof wooden door of the command post.
A tall figure wearing camouflage and a tactical vest walked out slowly.
It was Yuri, an officer in the Undertaker 7 squad.
The moment Dmitry saw Yuri, his pupils contracted slightly.
"Brilliant, truly a brilliant performance." Yuri, with a half-finished cigarette dangling from his lips, slowly walked down the steps.
He didn't even glance at the guards with their guns, but walked straight to Vorov's side, extended his right hand, and gently pressed down on Vorov's arm that was holding the gun.
"Major, don't be so irritable. High blood pressure isn't good for your heart." Yuri's voice carried a hint of mockery.
"Captain Yuri, this is my camp, and my rules are not to be challenged!" Vorov gritted his teeth, suppressing the urge to fire.
Clearly, he was wary of Yuri's strength.
"Rules? On this battlefield, only those who survive have the right to talk about rules."
Yuri exhaled a puff of smoke and looked Lu Ye up and down with great interest.
Looking at Lu Ye's face, covered in mud but showing no fear, and his right hand holding a knife to Scarface's throat, Yuri's eyes flashed with admiration.
"A lone wolf driven to the brink, yet daring to bare its fangs," Yuri said, turning to Vorov in a low voice.
"Worov, how many waves of your cannon fodder have gone to the chemical plant? They've all turned into fertilizer. Since he dares to take on this, why not let him give it a try?"
Worov frowned, his thick fingers stroking the stubble on his chin as he rapidly weighed the pros and cons, while simultaneously sizing up the fierce-looking Eastern mercenary before him.
Yuri added fuel to the fire: "If you kill him, you'll also anger Dmitry's regular army. Even if you don't care, it will still affect your business if things escalate to higher levels."
"Let him go. You'll suffer no loss if he dies; if he survives and brings back the coordinates, you'll get your medal."
Wolf's eyes darted around twice, and finally he let out a cold snort before putting the pistol back in its holster.
"Consider yourself lucky, you foreigner." Worov glared at Lu Ye. "What are your conditions?"
"I need to wire some money."
Vorov glanced at the guard with the broken wrist, then at Dmitry standing beside him, who looked as if facing a formidable enemy, and suddenly threw his head back and burst into laughter.
"Hahaha, this is fucking hilarious!"
"Fine, I'll grant your wish!"
Wolford shifted his obese body to the side and pointed into the command post: "The computers are in there, and the network is working. I'll give you five minutes."
After saying that, Vorov waved his hand impatiently, signaling the guards around him to put down their guns.
[Task Completed]
[Mission Reward: Basic Camouflage (LV1), Skill Point +1 has been sent to your system inventory!]
Hearing the notification sound in his mind, Lu Ye's tense nerves finally relaxed a little.
Lu Ye shoved the scarred guard aside, put away his dagger, and strode into the command post.
Dmitri tried to stop him, but Lu Ye stopped him with a look in his eyes.
Then he turned his head and looked at Yuri with a complicated expression.
Yuri was also looking at him.
There was no mockery, and no arguing.
Dmitri's eyes held a hint of helplessness, while Yuri's eyes flashed with regret.
They all knew that their ideologies were irreconcilable, but on the battlefield, survival always came first.
Three minutes later, Lu Ye walked out of the command post.
It was completely dark outside.
Dmitry and the members of the Seventh Squad were still waiting outside, their faces etched with heaviness.
"Let's go, Captain." Lu Ye patted Dmitri on the shoulder, a rare occurrence for him, his tone relaxed.
